I have a 2000 996 that judders badly off the start. Not bad enough that I can’t feather the clutch carefully and ignore it (for now). My question to you is this: it doesn’t judder when it’s cool, only when the car has reached operating temperature. Am I still looking at replacing a $2k part?

Your clutch is more than likely worn out, alo the flywheel which is a dual mass, the center is worn out, although you can not check that unles you remove the clutch.Mantis can do the job.

Clutch was replaced in March 2012. No word on whether the flywheel was inspected at that time.

If all the parts were replaced then the lywheel is suspect.

A very expensive suspicion. Any ideas why it works fine when cold?

When cold the flywheel damping is stiff, when warmer its looser. This allows for more undamped movement. Clutch judders then.
