Steering column issues
Posted Thursday, 14 May 2009 By Brian Spiteri
Here comes the famous "I am hearing a strange noise" and the follow up; any one ever encounter this before?
I am hearing a noise that sounds like a faint scraping when I turn my steering wheel (while driving and while the car is off) It sounds like it is coming from the place where the steering wheel meets the column. I can't see any points of contact that might be causing this sound. Any ideas related to a 1981 911SC?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!
scraping noise in steering

That is an easy one... the sound is actually coming from the brass wiper arm that acts like a "brush" connecting your horn circuit for your steering wheel. The solution is to pull the wheel off (mark it, the splines are continuous and you can reinstall the wheel crooked) clean the wiper, the corresponding contact ring on the back of the steering wheel, ensure the wiper arm does not contact anything other than the horn ring. Lubricate with a very small amount of petroleum jelly and reassemble.
Easy fix, a definite do-it-yourself repair. :-)
