'86 944 Gear Oil
Posted Tuesday, 01 December 2009 By Paul Ormandy
Its time to change the gear oil on my '86 944--Mobil 1 75/90 LS Gear Lubricant has been recommended, but finding it seems to be another story... even the local distributor can't tell me where I could buy less than a case!
So, does anyone have a retail source in the South Etobicoke area, or, are there other gear oils that members in the area use in 944s. Many Thanks.

Not sure who recommended this gear oil for your application, but it is the WRONG product. Unfortunately many people recommend GL-5 fluids for these gearboxes, which goes against Porsche's recommendation of a GL-4 fluid only.
The 944 gearbox is designed for a GL-4 fluid. That is because GL-4 fluids are compatible with bronze syncro's... and GL-5 is NOT. The confusion is that Mobil 1 says that the fluid is compatible with GL-4 in REAR AXLES, however a rear axle is not the same as a transaxle. Axle housings do not have synchronizers in them. See the attached link from Mobil's website.
http://www.mobil.com/USA-English/Lubes/PDS/GLXXENPVLMOMobil1_Synthetic_Gear_Lubricant_LS_75W-90.aspDo yourself a favour. Use the right product and protect your transaxle. Stick with a good quality GL-4 synthetic. If you can't find one with the LSD additive in it, the additive can be put in separately for just a few dollars more. If your shop was recommending a GL-5 for your application, perhaps you should look for a different shop that knows the details of your car's requirements.
I am sure there are lots of sources of the correct fluid in your area. Any speed and custom shop or specialty shop should be able to help you. Even Canadian Tire now carries quality synthetics that meet your requirements either by RedLline, Royal Purple or even Amsol. They all make a GL-4 for your application.
