2019 Driving Tour Schedule

WHILE YOU AND YOUR PORSCHE may have been hibernating and enjoying a good rest over the winter, many of your fellow club members have been enthusiastically planning over 15 incredible driving tours for 2019 — in Muskoka, Niagara, Georgian Bay, Kawartha Lakes, Prince Edward County, Lake Erie and even right downtown Toronto!

Presented here, have a look and mark your calendar! Registration for all driving tours occurs on the Club Registration website, opening eight weeks prior. First come, first serve — there are limited spots, some more limited than others, so set a reminder and act quickly before they book full. Several tours are already open for registration and filling up. The season opener Spring Into Action Muskoka heads out later this month!

If a tour is full, register anyway to get in queue on the wait list. Some will likely cancel and open up a spot for you. Or the host may increase the number of spots at some point.

Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines! And, as always, if you know a great route with some nice pit stops, then host a driving tour — contact Driving Tours Chair Stefan Walther at driving-tours@pcaucr.org.

SATURDAY, APRIL 27 — SPRING INTO ACTION MUSKOKA
Hosted by Larry Funnell, driving-tours@pcaucr.org
30 Porsches, $42 per person (includes lunch)

PCA UCR’s first driving tour of the 2019 traditional driving season is our big 11th annual Spring Into Action in Muskoka! After meeting at 9 a.m. in Orillia, about an hour from Toronto, this tour heads north in several driving groups with clear views of the lakes and streams through the naked forests, while we enjoy the fresh spring air and lack of summer traffic. Quickly we find ourselves off the beaten path, winding through the woods and marveling at the spectacular scenery as we make our way to Gravenhurst and on to Bala, where we have our first stop of the day. Then it’s onward and upward on some amazing curvy roads through Port Sandfield and then into Rosseau, where we enjoy a delicious buffet lunch at Crossroads restaurant — a destination that has proved extremely popular with past driving tour participants, with a wide array of scrumptious meal and dessert items. After a quick stop for a group picture with Lake Rosseau as the stunning backdrop, we wind our way down to Gravenhurst to conclude the great drive with a mid-afternoon get-together at a craft brewery.

SATURDAY, MAY 25 — SHOWSTOPPER SPRING AWAKENING NIAGARA
Hosted by Stefan Walther, driving-tours@pcaucr.org
30 Porsches, $67.50 per person (includes wine tasting, wine and canapé reception)

Kick off the 2019 driving season in style! And show off a bit — this driving tour starts with a Porsche car show and ends with a Porsche car show! With many Porsches emerging from their winter hibernation slumber, get the juices pumping once again in not only your car but also your own body with this fantastic drive up and down and around the mighty Niagara escarpment — starting in Burlington with a car show and breakfast at the large flagship store of Denninger’s Foods Of The World and wrapping up with a car show on the south lawn of Canada’s largest winery Peller Estates, complete with a gourmet wine and canapé reception! After departing Denninger’s, the route travels to the top of the escarpment with spectacular views of Lake Ontario, various towns and villages, and even Toronto’s skyline; then twists up and down some beautiful rolling back country; dips below the Welland Canal by way of the Thorold tunnel (gear down so we can hear you sing!); then connects with the picturesque Niagara River Parkway and heads into Old Town Niagara-On-The-Lake. Tucked into the Beamsville Bench, Thirty Bench winery hosts a midway pit stop with a couple of tastings — discover this boutique winery and the extraordinary flavour crafted from premium small lots and the unique mineral-rich terrior, including what is perhaps the best riesling in all of Niagara, if not the world. Thirty Bench offers a special PCA UCR club discount of $10 off per person on a purchase. A happy ending awaits as we pull onto the south lawn of Peller Estates winery for a car show and gourmet reception of fine wine and scrumptious canapés created by Executive Chef and Cityline personality Jason Parsons, inspired by local Niagara farms and growers. If desired, extend the enjoyment with fellow Porschephiles on the patio of Peller’s Barrel House Grill as the sun sets over the vineyards — and our beautiful cars.

SATURDAY, JUNE 1 — BEST BACK ROADS MUSKOKA
Hosted by Kathrin Menge, kathrinmenge@rogers.com
20 Porsches, $37 per person (includes après meal at the host’s lakeside cottage)

Discover and explore some of the best black asphalt of Ontario’s Muskoka back country, twisting and turning around various lakes and other waterways, rugged rock and mature forest — an invigorating drive set amongst breathtaking scenery, led by someone who knows the area best, a local cottage resident and fellow longtime Porsche Club member. Get your heart pumping and your engine roaring with this incredible drive! The day’s adventure begins mid-morning in Orillia, just an hour north of the Toronto area. Afterwards as the throaty flat-sixes wind down and low-profile performance rubber, now burned just a tad more low, cool down, so do we with a wonderful meal at the host’s cottage, overlooking the lake, back in the Orillia area. Mingle and refresh before heading home.

SATURDAY, JUNE 15 — PRINCE EDWARD COUNTY CULINARY
Hosted by Eric Wang, ericwang.hok@gmail.com
15 Porsches, $128 per person (includes wine tasting, lunch, salumi tasting workshop, beer tasting)

Enjoy a fun and memorable adventure in picture-perfect Prince Edward County! This driving tour explores some of the best country roads, with wonderful twists and turns, that PEC has to offer. Take in the scenery and treat your taste buds to a family-style lunch, served outdoors on the veranda at the picturesque Closson Chase Vineyards. Sample some of the best expressions of the county’s terroir via key varietals — pinot noir and chardonnay. After lunch, the driving tour continues into Adolphustown by means of the Glenora Ferry. Tune up your appreciation of the culinary arts with Angelo Bean, master artisanal sausage maker. Through Angelo’s salumi tasting workshop, learn his traditional methods of salumi and sausage making — one of the best-kept secrets of the county. At last we end our tour at the charming Parsons Brewing Company. Relax, unwind and revel in the company of fellow Porsche enthusiasts with a delicious local craft brew.

SATURDAY, JUNE 22 — SOUTHERN GEORGIAN BAY
Hosted by Martin Hederich, driving-tours@pcaucr.org
25 Porsches, $55 per person (includes lunch and entrance fees to attractions)

This popular driving tour is back for 2019! Explore the beautiful countryside along the southern shores of Georgian Bay. As usual, the group meets at 8:30 a.m. at a Tim Hortons just off Highway 400 in Innisfil before departing in two run groups, winding our way through the back roads of Clearview Township (motto: beautiful landscapes, friendly people). The first stop is at Edenvale Aerodrome airport where we visit the Edenvale Classic Aircraft Foundation to have a look at its classic planes. We then continue along the shores of Southern Georgian Bay to Penetanguishene for a visit to Discovery Harbour and enjoy lunch at the wonderful dockside restaurant at the edge of the water. After lunch, we continue on to nearby Midland and visit — back by popular demand — the Wye Marsh Conservation Centre where we are treated to a guided tour of the facility and a very special presentation. The drive wraps up at a nice restaurant for a drink and a bite to eat and some chat about the day’s adventure.

FRIDAY, JULY 12 — THE LAND BETWEEN (KAWARTHA LAKES)
Hosted by James Biggar, jbiggar@counterpointfinancial.com
30 Porsches, $40 per person (includes lunch)

An exceptional route has been carefully designed and perfected that meets the needs of Porsche enthusiasts and their high-performance cars — minimal traffic and great pavement! Please join us for a great day exploring a very rural area northeast of Toronto with fabulous roads and breathtaking rugged sights you likely have never seen. The Land Between has been described by author Brian Robert as “the chaotic collision of the St. Lawrence Lowlands and Canadian Shield,” a large swath of area that runs from Georgian Bay in the west to Kingston in the east — “rolling hills, flat plains, hard rock and conifers.” A midday lunch stop is planned amongst the natural beauty of this spectacular pocket of our great province. This driving tour is scheduled for a Friday to enhance the experience by avoiding weekend lollygaggers— highway impediments such as sluggish Kias, cyclists, boat trailers and the like.

SATURDAY, AUG. 3 — SUMMER CRUISE AND GOURMET SOUTHERN COOK-OUT (NIAGARA)
Hosted by Klaus Reif, driving-tours@pcaucr.org
30 Porsches, $62 per person (includes mini car show, winery tour and tastings, and gourmet southern cook-out)

Celebrate all that is good and great about summer with this fabulous driving tour through Niagara wine country — a curvy route perfect for Porsches followed by a delicious gourmet southern-style cook-out crafted by local chef Collin Goodine and hosted by fellow club member Klaus Reif at his namesake Reif Estate Winery, a founding winery of the region situated on the Niagara River in Niagara-On-The-Lake! In addition, Klaus will lead a private tour and tastings for his fellow club members and their guests. Klaus is a huge auto enthusiast and Porsche fan, currently owning many cars — several of them Porsches. Reif Estate Winery has played host to many car club get-togethers including Corvette (Klaus owns two) and Tesla. This driving tour’s route is the very latest and greatest of Niagara’s twists and turns, honed to perfection over numerous PCA UCR driving tours, starting in the Hamilton area around noon and riding the mighty escarpment all the way into Niagara-On-The-Lake. The tour wraps on the lawn of Reif Estate Winery where chef Collin Goodine crafts several new takes on southern cook-out favourites — buttermilk fried chicken, pulled pork, Philly cheesesteak, cedar-plank salmon, unique salads, finished with a selection of delectable desserts — that you won’t want to miss!

SATURDAY, AUG. 10 — ERWIN KOMENDA (OAKVILLE TO BEAMSVILLE)
Hosted by Stephen and Jenn Fowler, driving-tours@pcaucr.org
15 Porsches, $TBA per person (includes breakfast refreshments and winery tastings)

Erwin Komenda, designer, engineer and metallurgist, was one of the first hires to the newly founded Dr. Ing. h. c. F. Porsche GmbH in 1931. Working with Porsche, he would design the bodywork for Auto Union and Cisitalia Grand Prix cars, the Volkswagen Beetle, and most importantly to Porschephiles, the 356 and 901. His simple, fluid design language continues in Porsches today, including the new 992 generation of the 911. Join this driving tour for an enjoyable day celebrating his accomplishments and the impact they have had on our favourite marque. Coffee, tea and delicious scones and tea biscuits are served at our starting location, located close to the lake in Oakville. A brief introduction to Komenda’s life and design precedes our setting off for a scenic and leisurely drive west along Lakeshore Road. We travel to Ontario’s best wine appellation, stopping at several favourite locations for wine tasting and other delights of the Beamsville Bench. An ability to appreciate fine food, beverages and great driving roads is highly encouraged.

SATURDAY, AUG. 17 AND SUNDAY, AUG. 18 — THE SOUTH COAST JAZZ FESTIVAL WEEKEND (PORT DOVER)
Hosted by John Buckingham and Jeremy Gunness, jebuck1@aol.com
25 Porsches, $226 per person (includes South Coast Jazz Festival ticket, lunch, reception, dinner, performances, brunch, boat tour)

Sign up early for the second iteration of one of the most sought-after driving tours of the 2018 season! This time, we plan the tour as a full weekend event! As before, we depart from Milton and follow a special route over and around Hamilton Mountain and then stop for a group lunch enroute to Port Dover in Norfolk County, the home of a number of wineries and lavender farms. Jeremy outlined a great route in 2018 which had us crisscrossing the escarpment on some exciting roads, many of us felt this was the most fun driving tour we had been engaged in that year! Port Dover is the home of the South Coast Jazz Festival, now in its sixth year and attracting top-tier jazz and blues performers over the festival weekend (Saturday and Sunday), with the main event taking place Saturday evening. This driving tour includes a special ticket for each person to the festival which includes a reception, dinner and the evening performances. A special “Porsche Paddock” is again planned next to the main event venue, so parking at this busy festival is taken care of! On Sunday, a group brunch happens at the Brant Hill Inn, one of the focal points of the festival, followed by an exclusive boat tour of the Grand River. All included in this driving tour. A block of hotel and bed-and-breakfast rooms has been reserved but be warned — the number of hotel and rooms in Norfolk County is rather limited so, if you would like to reserve a room, please register early and then contact John Buckingham regarding the available accommodation options. In any case, the block of rooms will be released by July 1, in fairness to the demand from other festival participants. And the festival ticket gives you access to any of the other festival performances on Sunday. For more info on the festival, visit http://www.southcoastjazz.com/

SUNDAY, AUG. 25 — DOWNTOWN PORSCHE LAKE ONTARIO BOULEVARD CRUISE
Hosted by Downtown Porsche, driving-tours@pcaucr.org
25 Porsches, free of charge (includes morning refreshments and lunch, compliments of the host)

This driving tour starts mid-morning in one of the best ways possible — mingling with fellow Porsche enthusiasts and club members, surrounded by the shiniest of the latest and greatest that our favourite automaker has to offer, in the bright inviting showroom of our host, Downtown Porsche. If there is a good time to drive in Toronto, it would certainly be early on a Sunday. No worries, however, we aren’t hanging around long — as the heart of the city wakes up and starts beating, we set out east to drive some of the best GTA roads that hug the shores of Lake Ontario, with pit stops into several interesting picturesque areas, opportunities to take in the magnificent scenery and pose for a couple of photo-ops. Afterwards we wrap up the cruise much the same way as we began, with a delicious meal, compliments of the host, Downtown Porsche, at a nice east-end eatery.

SUNDAY, SEPT. 15 — PORSCHE CENTRE NORTH TORONTO ENTHUSIAST CRUISE
Hosted by Porsche Centre North Toronto, driving-tours@pcaucr.org
25 Porsches, free of charge (includes light breakfast, lunch and gift, compliments of the host)

Join fellow Porsche aficionados and be a part of the first annual Porsche Centre North Toronto Enthusiast Cruise! Departing from Porsche Centre North Toronto, we drive north and flow out of the city with exciting and delicious stops along the way. Our route includes some back roads, some highways — and a full dose of fun. The day begins at 10 a.m. with a light breakfast and gift at the Carrera Café inside Porsche Centre North Toronto, then we take the on-ramp heading northbound away from the city before arriving at our first stop, Engineered Automotive, where we enjoy the sights (and sounds) of the dealership’s 911 GT3 Cup car, along with classic Porsche cars that accompany great stories. Next we continue north until we reach our lunch destination, after which we work our way through some of the roads less traveled where we take in the beauty of our Porsche convoy driving together on the open road. Finally, we arrive at our last destination where we have the opportunity to take a group photo together to remember the first-ever Porsche Centre North Toronto Enthusiast Cruise.

SUNDAY, SEPT. 22 — PFAFF PORSCHE GTA URBAN CIRCUIT
Hosted by Pfaff Porsche, driving-tours@pcaucr.org
25 Porsches, free of charge (includes morning refreshments and lunch, compliments of the host)

You don’t need to venture outside of the Toronto area to have an amazing Sunday drive — you just have to get out on the road early enough. Starting with coffee and refreshments at Pfaff Porsche in Vaughn, this Sunday drive strings together some of the most picturesque roads in the GTA — as well as some of its best on- and off-ramps. It’s a great way to explore the city in your Porsche, then end the day with lunch and an opportunity for socializing with fellow Porsche aficionados.

SATURDAY, SEPT. 28 — AUTUMN BLAZE KAWARTHA LAKES
Hosted by PCA UCR Driving Tours, driving-tours@pcaucr.org
30 Porsches, $52 per person (includes gourmet lunch)

Fire up your Porsche for one of 2019’s final — and best — driving tours as we carve our way through Kawartha Lakes’ rolling hills, rugged rock and flat plains, set ablaze in all their autumn glory, via some of the smoothest and curviest highways, with a relaxing gourmet lunch stop at Stone 21 restaurant at the fabulous Pinestone Resort in Haliburton. This extraordinary drive begins at 10 a.m. just north of Toronto, in Uxbridge, warming up with some sweeping curves and straight blasts as we head into rural lake country. We snag a quick pit stop in Bobcaygeon and then tackle some seriously fantastic highways on our way to Haliburton and a delicious lunch at Stone 21 restaurant, relaxing among Kawartha Lakes’ tremendous natural beauty, amped up by fall’s foliage and crisp clear air. After lunch, we snake our way back towards civilization through the heart of the Kawarthas, again on some of the area’s best roads, nestled among various waterways and marshlands, scattered farms, mature woods and sprawling countryside. To wrap up, we pop into a diner for a refreshing beverage, possibly a snack, to share some stories of the day’s great adventure before dispersing and setting off for our respective homes. This driving tour has been moved up two weeks from last year’s edition so that we find more coloured leaves on the trees rather than on the ground — though there was still a spectacular kaleidoscope hanging on — as well as a slightly warmer temperature.

SATURDAY, OCT. 5 — NUIT BLANCHE NIGHTCRAWLER (TORONTO)
Hosted by Eric Wang, ericwang.hok@gmail.com
15 Porsches, free of charge

Nuit Blanche Toronto 2019 — a dusk-‘til-dawn art festival that magically transforms Toronto’s streets and public spaces into an artistic playground with modern installations, live performances and creative programs. Celebrate the art of the drive by joining this driving tour for a fun urban night crawl, exploring the GTA’s hidden and forgotten back roads. Pit stops include contemporary art happenings in both Scarborough and the downtown Toronto area. Experience the thrill of the night ride with fellow enthusiasts, while appreciating the fine art of automotive engineering your Porsche has to offer!

SATURDAY, OCT. 12 — AUTUMN COLOURS NIAGARA
Hosted by PCA UCR Driving Tours, driving-tours@pcaucr.org
25 Porsches, $55.55 per person (includes wine tasting, wine and canapé reception)

Enjoy the vibrant splendor of autumn in Niagara, at its very peak at this time in October, as we pilot our Porsches along the top of the escarpment, beginning just outside Hamilton and wrapping up in Queenston Heights and Old Town Niagara-On-The-Lake on the Niagara River. Introduce your Porsche to some of the great driving roads in Niagara’s breathtaking back yard! This run features some impressive twists and turns, ups and downs, traversing the mighty Niagara escarpment as well as the surrounding area, dotted by beautiful conservation areas, snaking rivers, quaint villages and fine wineries. Several opportunities exist to stop, chat, snap some photos and enjoy the best of Porsche and Niagara — including a relaxing stop into the Wine Lodge at Fielding Estate Winery for a sample or two, with its expansive balcony overlooking an incredible valley of vineyards. Your eyes will delight in not only Niagara’s colourful leaves cranked up to their highest volume, but also the spectacular panoramic views of Lake Ontario and the various towns and villages tucked among the escarpment. This driving tour wraps in style — back by popular demand — as we pull onto the south lawn of Peller Estates winery for a mini car show and gourmet reception of fine wine and scrumptious canapés created by Executive Chef and Cityline personality Jason Parsons, inspired by local Niagara farms and growers. If desired, extend the enjoyment with fellow Porschephiles on the patio of Peller’s Barrel House Grill as the sun sets over the vineyards — and our beautiful cars. Just like the Autumn Blaze Kawartha Lakes Driving Tour, the timing for this annual romp has been moved, pushed back, to better take advantage of the colourful leaves, which are later in Niagara. </>
