Bob Leeming’s 1997 911 Carrera S

OWNING A PORSCHE has been a dream of mine since the mid-‘70s when Porsche Canada mailed me a die-cast model of a 911 coupe in response to an ad in a sports magazine. I was hooked. My fascination with the Porsche marque was only enhanced by a six-month stint as a car jockey at a dealer north of Toronto after university graduation. I was being paid the minimum wage to drive Porsches up and down the recently extended Highway 404.

In 2007 I was able to realize my dream. In the early spring had a discussion with my wife about the prospect of starting to shop for a Porsche and received her blessing. Well, I took it as a blessing though she actually said something like, “get whatever you want, I’m indifferent, I’ll never drive it.” My hope was to find an air-cooled Porsche and, by sheer coincidence, I stumbled upon a 1997 993 Carrera S in Vesuvio grey metallic. I was smitten with the colour. Is it graphite? Is it black? Is it purple? And it was only a matter of time before I took the plunge.

Some readers may recall a similar car was profiled in the January 2020 edition of Panorama and the owner indicated he’d learned that only 60 cars were painted this colour and, of those, only 24 were shipped to North America. While the rare colour of this 993 is a bonus, I love looking at the silhouette of this car, I love washing this car and I especially love driving this car — almost as much as my wife does. </>
