Can-Am Challenge 2018

THE 23rd ANNUAL UCR CAN-AM CHALLENGE is now in the books! And it was a great 4 days of clear hot weather for Testing, Tuning, Lapping and Racing.

We were joined again this year by the Trillium BMW club and after 1 year hiatus Advanced Solo Lapping was back with a ton of total track time. Our 4 day event started with a Test and Tune day on Thursday attended by a total of 39 drivers consisting of Race & ASL drivers from PCA and BMW.

Friday saw the start of 3 days of PCA & BMW Racing and Solo lapping.

ASL was well attended with 38 drivers. We had a strong PCA Race turnout with lots of UCR & Rensport drivers and a strong US contingent from as far as Texas. Although we did lose a few during Thursdays Test & Tune Friday practice started with 35 Yellow group drivers and 31 Red group drivers. BMW started the day with practice and qualifying and finished with a 60 Min Enduro.

On Friday evening we had a capacity crowd BBQ in the paddock with ~150 hungry drivers, crew and volunteers. Many stayed till sunset retelling old stories or attempting to create a new legend. Before it got too late a dozen or so broke away with racing legend Rick Bye for the annual track walk and driving seminar. Rick has been doing this for 23 years and is truly dedicated to racing and coaching. I saw him much later back in the paddock discussing corner 5 with a racer from Tennessee. It must have stuck because that racer had a podium on Saturday.

Saturday was Sprint day for PCA and BMW with 2 sprints for each class. After racing we had the annual dinner and awards at the CTMP events centre. This was another capacity event with ~200 guests. Many stayed after the awards to chat and enjoy the view from the event centre balcony.

On Sunday BMW had one more sprint race and PCA ran a combined Yellow & Red 90 minute Enduro with 39 drivers. The ASL drivers closed out the weekend with several hours of open track time.

Detailed lap timing can be viewed via Race Hero.

Flight Squad media were with us again photographing cars and creating our awards certificates. You can find a selection of FS images as well as images from other people and volunteers on the following UCR home pages:

Our sponsors are a critical part of underpinning our Race weekend and we welcome back Porsche Centre Oakville Motorsport, Porsche Cars Canada, Braidan Motorsports and Policaro BMW.

Porsche Centre Oakville, our Presenting Sponsor, has been a strong supporter of UCR since the dealership opened in 2013. Francesco Policaro and Hans Ulsrud lead an experienced team at the dealership who have developed to be an integral and key part of the Porsche family. Drop in and see them at their state of the art facility in Oakville. I know you will be welcome. Our thanks also for the gorgeous GT3 Macan S pace car.

Another part of Policaro Motorsport is Policaro BMW in Brampton and they are the Presenting Sponsor for BMW Trillium. They have a beautiful facility at the Highway 410 and Mayfield auto mall in Brampton and I know Francesco Policaro (different member of the family), and his team will welcome you. Our thanks also for the stunning BMW Pace car.

Porsche Cars Canada have been our National Sponsor of our Club Race since it started 23 years ago. This year we are delighted to welcome their new President Marc Ouayoun. Marc joined Porsche Canada effective Jan 1, 2018 having been the Managing Director at Porsche France. Welcome to Canada, Marc and our sincere thanks for Porsche Canada’s great support over these many years.

Trackside cars need tires, brake pads, timing devices etc and drivers need clothing, helmets and other track-related products and there is no one better in the business than Brad Shimbashi of Braidan Motorsport. As our National Trackside Sponsor, Brad has been a valued supporter of UCR for many years and you will find him at his state of the art facility at the track. Drop in and see his facility

While the cars on the track run on high octane fuel, PCA is ‘fueled by volunteers’…and not just a few!

The National team truly are a dedicated lot travelling from all over North America to ensure the success of ClubRacing. This year we were joined by Daniel Carusillo, Paul Marty, Donna Amico, Roland Nieves, Vicki Earnshaw, Bryan Henderson, Susan Shire. They were a great group of folks to work with we learned a lot and had a good time.

And ultimately without the dedicated support of our local volunteers there would be no CAN-AM Challenge. A special thank you to my co-chair Walter Murray, you have much to teach, Jackie Metcalfe for stepping up to be Grid Captain, high energy required. And Renate Weidner for stepping up as registrar, it starts slow but gets busy. In addition we had a team this year of ~44 PCA volunteers from UCR and Zone 1. On behalf of myself and UCR I would like to thank our 2018 volunteers for their hard work and dedication. And I hope they will consider it for 2019.
