Thanks to both of you John and Brian for your feedback. I have sent an e-mail to Dave Osborne so hopefully he can set me up with a set of new numbers.
Ok thanks for your suggestion Rob, much appreciated.
Gotta agree with yuh Weasel, it was a blast, even for an aging kid like myself (I was the black C4S Cab parked beside you on Saturday … # 664). I thought I was really stepping it up until you and your friend in the Bimmer kept blowing by me and shattering my ego (oh forgot, we are not supposed to take our egos to the track!!!). I did the IDS on Friday and gained a whole lot of respect for the capabilities of Porsche cars. Saturday and Sunday opened my eyes to the intricacies of handling a high performance car on a technically demanding track and learning and then trying to hold “the line” while at the same time trying to push the car to it’s limits (well, my limits at least). Nothing short of “totally exhilarating” and yes, addictive!
Besides adding my koodos to all the organizers and volunteers involved in the past three days I would like to express particular appreciation to Mike Sylvester for his great instruction throughout the weekend. The ride in the shot-gun seat of his GT3 with the yellow group late Saturday was an amazing chance to see how it can/should be done. I came away from the weekend exhausted but with a big grin on my face!
Waitlisted for Sept DE, so we’ll see if I get an opportunity to run the big track this year.
Thanks for the advice on the helmets guys. I too am on the waitlist for the August DE and I had read that post about the 5 year rating limit and the non-availability of the 2015 models. Guess I ‘ll try to round up a loaner or purchase a used one in case I do get accepted for the Aug event.
Just one more question Andy (for now!). Is there a similar first DE Event exemption regarding the helmet requirement?
Ok thanks Andy, that helps. As mentioned in my earlier post, the bracket is mounted on the front of the driver’s seat so it will not interfere in anyway with the instructor.
Gotcha Andy, thanks. I have shared your comments with my insurance agent and they in turn shared with the insurance company. Based on your succinct explanation of what the IDS and DE programs are all about, the fact that I am a long time customer of this insurance company with a spotless driving record and my age (a very young at heart 66), they have confirmed my existing policy will cover my involvement in the IDS on Aug 14th and should there be room in the Aug 15th and 16th novice DE event they will cover me on that as well. They suggest any further events that I may want to participate in will be subject to review of the particulars of each event, a requirement that I consider completely fair.
Thanks so much for helping me explain exactly what the nature of these events and their purpose is all about. Very much appreciated!
Thank you again Andy, I appreciate your “long-winded” (but comprehensive) response. You very articulately outline precisely what I tried to explain to my insurance agent occurs at both the IDS and DE sessions, however unsuccessfully. With your permission I will share your reply verbatim with my insurer to see if they will reconsider their position.
Thanks for the reply Andy. I see the point! Can you suggest a supplier closer to the east side of Metro TO as I am out in Newcastle?
I just noticed the requirement in the DE Handbook that the Fire extinguisher bracket must be “metal mounted to metal”. I have a 2008 911 4S cab that has what looks to be a factory installed fire extinguisher mounted to the front of the driver’s seat, but it is a half-shell plastic bracket with a quick-release strap around the mid section of the extinguisher. By all appearances this looks like a very secure arrangement and I question why the “metal to metal” bracket requirement. Can anyone advise if I need to replace this set-up if I enrol in the DE program?
