The Summer of 2018 In Review
JUNE MARKS THE BEGINNING OF SUMMER… students are let out from school, the flowers are in full bloom, the weather is warm as heck and the energy to get on with summertime activities is mounting. We just can’t wait for those vacation days for our families and friends to kick in. While there were many events and activities this summer, only some randomly selected events were chosen to be reconstructed below as room permits. Enjoy reminiscing with me through this past hot and wonderful 2018 Summertime!
June 8….Happy 70th Birthday Porsche!
2018 UCR Picnic & Concours launched June’s Summertime fun on June 10, 2018 at Boyd Conservation area near Woodbridge where a great sunny day was enjoyed by all who attended. Highlighting 70 years of the Porsche brand, from 1948-2018, marking the historic date of June 8, 1948 when the first Porsche, 356 ‘No 1’ Roadster was launched. In the July 2018 issue of Provinz, Michael Pohlmann, Vice President and Concours Co-Chair wrote a wonderful recap of the event attended by over 500 UCR members.
The June social held at Islington Golf Club was well attended where a delicious dinner was enjoyed by all and driving tours were encouraged to be hosted. Brad McDonald presented his unique car transportation company known as SRT Carriers who will gladly arrange pick-up/drop-off and delivery of vehicles bought in Canada or the USA.
The July social was held at Mandarin Restaurant, Brampton where Constable Cory Adams of the Durham Region Police Service presented his talk on Trucks and Trailers and the safety message behind it all, for those of us who like to trailer our cars to the track. See August issue pg 13 for the complete story as written by Peter Blake, Social Co-Chair.
The August social took place at Porsche Centre North Toronto where 125 UCR members attended. Peter Blake once again wrote a detailed account of the fun had by all at the social in the September issue of Provinz on pg 13.
Driving Tours included Muskoka as written by Max Nowak, PCA Junior & Matt Nowak, UCR member, where members went from Orillia to Gravenhurst.
The Niagara Tour, featured by John Tsourounis, had 31 Porsches and 60 UCR enthusiasts where the tour drove along the Niagara Escarpment and ventured into Thorold below the Welland Canal (my home town area) to the final destination of Peller Estates Winery and Restaurant.
Southern Georgian Bay driving tour was featured by Jean-Guy Francoeur, UCR member when Jean-Guy described his first Porsche driving tour…what a memory for him and others as we recall our own first Porsche experiences.
Ahh, The Blue Mountains Driving Tour! So refreshing and exhilarating an area to drive through. Martin Tekela, UCR member and Past President recounts the delightful fun had by everyone as they experienced the spectacular views of the mountains and valleys featuring the beautiful blue waters of Lake Huron.
And then there’s more wine! Only east bound instead of west. Off to Prince Edward County where the shores of Lake Ontario grace wine county with a different taste. Chris Jaw, UCR member recounts the excursion taken through county roads and winery estates, picnicking and wine tasting all in one day!
TrackTalk 117 by Dave Osborne, UCR Track Chairman, continued to enthrall us with his information and knowledge of driving the track. In June, driven2smile (D2S) and the traditional Track Walk event at Mosport (CTMP) was featured with the complete story being told in the July issue of Provinz on pg 36. A very special thanks to Jill Clements, UCR member, who clearly had so much energy and goodness in her heart to run with this event. For Jill’s story, see August Provinz, pg 14.
The Porsche Parade, as featured in August issue, pg 24, celebrated UCR’s big wins including UCR member participation awards and receiving the Betty Jo Turner Award for Provinz, top newsletter of all 145 regions. Great write ups were submitted by Botho and Susan von Bose, Past President and UCR Member and by Mike Bryan, UCR Past President.
Porscheplatz 2018 graced the scenes at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park (Mosport) in July where everyone experienced one of the best Porscheplatz events ever!
The CAN-AM Challenge 2018 was featured and photographed in the September issue of Provinz, and featured items such as 3 days of PCA and BMW Racing and Solo lapping. Terry Cassan, Co-Chair describes the event and highlights the activities enjoyed by all.

BlueBella brings delight and happiness to Brad and Keltie Luft, UCR members. Recounting their travels along the US west coast from San Francisco to LA, Brad tells how Keltie is won over by Porsche and how BlueBella comes into their lives and is named after Brad’s grandmother.
Ian John reflects on 25 years of UCR membership and his service on the board. He’s written articles for Provinz, and has participated in tracking. Read more of Ian’s story in the July issue of Provinz.
John Blaicher UCR Porschephile member ‘finally gets it’ as he describes how he purchased his first Porsche after 25 years of living the journey. John quotes James Dean, “Dream as if you will live forever, live as if you will die today.” </>
