Sam Hoh’s Speedster Send-Off

Club members Sam Hoh and his wife Tanny Lin take delivery of their stunning Carmine Red 911 Speedster, number 1194, at Porsche Centre North Toronto

MOST CAR MAKERS quietly phase out a model’s generation with little to no fanfare, replacing it with an all-new, better-than-ever version that usually has a bold new style, new engine and cutting-edge new technology. They don’t want the old to overshadow the new and steal the limelight. Sales fall off, the old model cruises off into the sunset.

But Porsche isn’t like most car makers. And the 911 is not like most car models.

Style-wise, the most telling features of the Speedster are the shortened, by two inches, windshield and side glass, the manually operated roof and, of course, those two beautiful signature humps behind the passenger cabin.

And, as we know, Porschephiles are not like any other car fan. This is an understatement for sure. Many of us prefer a certain previous model over any all-new version, new-fangled tech gadgets be damned.

And so the 911 Speedster pictured on these pages sends off the 991 series in proper glory — out with a bang! Club member Sam Hoh recently took delivery of this stunning 911 Speedster in gorgeous Carmine Red and it holds extra special meaning for him.

Based on the incredible GT3 coupe, the Speedster borrows that car’s highly-capable, naturally aspirated 4.0-litre flat-six, cranking out around 500 horsepower and revving all the way up to an astounding 9,000 RPM. You have to hear it to believe it, amplified through an exclusive titanium exhaust system. Ask for a demo the next time you see Sam Hoh at a club social.

Numerous weight-savings measures include a carbon-fibre frunk lid, front fenders and rear decklid, the aforementioned exhaust system, plus even the provision of a six-speed manual over the regular seven-speed, the latter saving nine pounds.

Sam Hoh’s 911 Speedster is number 1194 of just 1948 built, paying homage to Porsche’s birth year and giving this model a proper send-off fit for the king.

Not only is the car itself extra special but also this number 1194. Sam Hoh explains that, read backwards, it is 4 911 — this is his fourth 911, one of which was delivered on 9/11, Sept. 11, which is also his birthday. And he has been driving Porsches for 32 years, since September 1988. </>
