2018 UCR Picnic & Concours

WHAT A DAY! Perfect temperature, sunshine, over 300 Porsches and record attendance for a UCR event…501 members (including 53 children)!!!

The Picnic and Concours took place on Sunday June 10th to tie in with Porsche’s 70th birthday on June 8th. The various Porsche dealerships also held events on June 9th to celebrate.

This year we returned to Boyd Conservation Area for a second time. The positive feedback we had from members two years ago made it an easy choice for our event. This year we had both fields and shelters and this allowed us to block off the dusty road to allow the cars to drive across the grass.

Volunteers started setting up at 7:30 am and at 9 am the Park gate opened to a long line of enthusiastic members ready to register. More and more beautiful Porsches kept coming as we started lining cars up in a “70” configuration on the field. Co-Chair Dave Walker had drawn out detailed geometric plans to place the “70” on the field, allowing enough room for Vendors to be lined up along the forest to the south and an “underline” under the “70” in case we needed it (and we did!).

Every time I looked over at the registration area, more Porsches were arriving. I hadn’t seen this many Porsches in one spot since my last Porsche Parade! The overflow Porsches were then lined up in front of the vendors and off to each side of the field.

FlightSquad Media was on site for the day to photograph and video the Porsches arriving and setting up. We look forward to seeing the video in the near future!

Our delicious lunch was well organized and the line-ups flowed quickly followed up by the ever-popular ice cream truck. A big thank you to “Fire it Up”.

The Concours judges were kept busy throughout the morning thoroughly inspecting each of the thirteen entries in the Concours. Also throughout the morning UCR members were busy taking time to vote for their favourite Porsche for the Peoples Choice awards.

Throughout the day we handed out a number of door prizes, many based on the Porsche “70” theme for adults. For the younger crowd, Porsche themed Lego, Playmobile, a Hot Wheels race set and even a remote controlled 1:18 scale GT3 stirred up the excitement. Congratulations to all the winners!

We would like to thank Kathrin Menge from Porsche Cars Canada for donating the three white Porsche flags that were proudly flown at the event. In addition, Kathrin also provided the Porsche “70” flags, special sticker sheets and “70” lanyards for each member to help celebrate the day. Thank you Kathrin!

Thank you to Hagerty Insurance for providing the gift bags for the Concours participants and for the door prizes.

A number of our Provinz advertisers took part in the day, each of them setting up a booth. As always, we appreciate your support. Thank you to: Rick McLaughlin – Downtown Porsche; Laurance Yap, Jerome Hylton, Vincent Ho, Rick Reid and Kristi – Pfaff Porsche; John Capalla, Matthew Tam – Porsche Centre North Toronto; Altman Wong – Mount Pleasant Group; Sy Langer – Ultimate Transportation; Randy Meyers – Whaletail; and, Zoran Halavanja – Zorotech.

Lastly, our club is fuelled by volunteers. Without them we would not be able to organize and hold our events. A special thank you to my Co-Chair David Walker and to our volunteers: Setup Team – Peter Oakes, Beth Oakes, Jay Diament, Joanne Diament, Stefan Walther, Randy Spenceley (Hagerty representative). Concours Judging Team: Bruce Farrow, Donna Farrow, Rosemary Adam, John Adam, Danny Kroll, Randy Gananathan. Registration Desk – Kathleen Wong, George Wong, Terrence Tong, Judy Tong, Mark Solomon, Peter Blake, Susan Blake. Kids Area – Jill Clements, Thom Baartman. Membership – Angie Herring, Mark Herring. Photos/Video – FlightSquad Media Team led by Ryan Tam.
