The cars arrived in the mystique of a heavy fog – bright finishes disrupting the atmosphere of grey gloom.
The coffee was hot and the cars sat like beasts at rest, admired respectfully in the knowledge that any could unleash ferocity at a moment’s notice: 356, 911, 914, 928, 944, 958, 971, 981, 982, 986, 987, 991, 992, 993, 996, 997 all lurking.
Then the warm sun of the unofficial kick-off to summer and car season burned off the fog and brightened the mood. The revellers frolicked, discussing their cars and those of others with each other, some heading inside Hagerty Garage + Social. There, they saw supercars in slumber – a place where million-dollar cars are not out of the ordinary – and other wonders for the senses.
Saturday, May 18 was the start of the Cars + Coffee season. We were hosted by Collector Car Canada Online Auctions, at one of the landmarks of the local car scene. By 9:10, Porsche owners had lived up to their reputation for promptness and the overflow parking was activated. It would have been difficult to give every machine the attention it merited, with Porsches on-site into the hundreds.
But the attendees gave it their best effort, wandering through the rows and enjoying lighthearted chatter about particularities of models, paint codes and air intakes.
The event was the personification of the PCA slogan:
“It’s not just the cars, it’s the people.”
