“Porsche or Nothing!”

FOR UCR MEMBER, Nadim Abdo, there really is no substitute. From the age of 10 living in Lebanon, Nadim has understood what makes Porsche so “unique and special.” As a boy, a family friend took the young, impressionable Nadim out for a ride. From that moment, he was infatuated and it would be “Porsches or Nothing!” from then on.

Nadim’s model preference has always been the 911. According to him they are “built a certain way. It’s just you and the car.” The dream of owning a Turbo was a deeply rooted desire. However as life goes, dreams can sometime take time to reach fruition. For a variety of reasons, the Turbo was never quite justifiable and not quite in the budget.

A sharp looking triple-black, 1987 911 Carrera Cab came his way. He loved its classic looks. Its smell, its sound and he was sold. He joined the UCR shortly after the purchase and never looked back.

Then a sharp looking triple-black, 1987 911 Carrera Cab came his way. He loved its classic looks. Its smell, its sound and he was sold. He joined the UCR shortly after the purchase and never looked back. That was 20 years ago and Nadim admits that, he’s “…never got sick of it and every drive was as good as the first time I took her out.”

Driven seasonal and always babied, the Carrera became an integral part of his family’s life. So much so that in recent years when Nadim finally decided to change things up and seek out the favoured Turbo, it was an emotional moment for himself and his family. His children had grown up with the Carrera and they were very sad to see it go. The Carrera ended up in good hands according to Nadim but he has plenty to remember it by.

The personalized plate originated 10 years ago when Nadim’s nephew declared, while on a camping trip, that he would refer to Nadim as ‘Deemsy’ from that moment forward. The nickname stuck and in December 2016, the Carrera was selected as one of Panorama’s Pictures of the Month. The image, hangs as a 4×3 poster on his wall at home.

Nadim’s commitment to the Carrera however, goes even further. Near the end of his ownership, Nadim got a tattoo of the model on his bicep. An admittedly permanent and lifetime commitment to the brand he loves.

The search for the Turbo began in earnest a year before he found the model he ended up falling in love with. He was seeking an all stock, 6-speed, non-modified 996 turbo that had been loved as much as he had loved the Carrera. He didn’t want anything that had been, in his words, “abused or altered.” He found his 2002 996 Turbo at a dealer in Ohio. “It’s a beauty” he told me with pride. He says he enjoys the amazing torque it offers, its stability and 959 side profile. As he describes it, he “…goes for a drive and when I come back. I’m buzzing for hours.”

With ownership of the Turbo achieved, Nadim assures me that no, this will hopefully not be his last Porsche. While he’s made some lifetime commitments to his vehicles and Porsche brand, something new might be in his future. Five to 10 years in his future, that is! </>
