NOT ONE OF THE 47 PARTICIPANTS complained that the Snow Way! Winter Niagara Driving Tour was postponed to a truly spectacular first day of spring.
Due to COVID-19 provincial restrictions, the tour that was originally set for Feb. 20 was pushed back to March 20 and the group could not have asked for better weather — bright, sunny and 15 degrees. Snow way? No way. Not a flake to be found, in the sky or on the ground.
Twenty-five Porsches of various body styles and vintages met up in Stoney Creek at noon. To ensure health and safety, and to adhere to any provincial guidelines, no group gathering was allowed and social interaction was minimized. All administration was communicated electronically in the days before, including waivers, route directions and the safety briefing. Anytime someone was outside of their Porsche, they had to be wearing a mask and had to physical distance at least two metres.
The route followed the Niagara escarpment, riding high along Ridge Road with breathtaking views of the villages and Lake Ontario below, traversing up and down in spots that included some dramatic hair-pin turns. A pit stop was made at 13th Street Winery for a curb-side pick-up of a special wine gift pack (bottle of wine, housemade salsa and double raspberry jam). Also on offer was a discounted six-pack of wine that was put together just for our Porsche club. Many club members also took the opportunity to pre-order delicious items from the winery’s bakery, including its phenomenal butter tarts.
The tour then proceeded into Queenston Heights and the Niagara-on-the-Lake area to wrap up, via the curvy and picturesque Niagara River Parkway.
