The February Valentine’s Social at the Old Country Inn in Unionville was, as Borat would say, “a great success!”. It was fun chatting with our membership over wine and schnitzel. The parking lot was a “Porsche Buffet” – with a couple of Macans, Cayennes and different types of 911s. In typical fashion I kept a sharp eye out on what our members were wearing on their wrists, and asked them to proudly display their timepieces for this month’s lifestyle article.

Starting with our very own UCR VP Larry Funnell and his Garmin smartwatch. If the manufacturer’s name sounds familiar it’s because Garmin produces GPS navigation systems. Larry’s watch isn’t just your typical smartwatch, in that it doesn’t just track your fitness and steps but also helps with your Golf game! This model is from the “VENU” series, and has an onboard app that can download golf courses, hole information – and keeps score, shot and round history. Wonder if it also yells “FORE!” on Larry’s behalf?! Happy golfing this season Larry!

I also connected with Bill and David, who proudly displayed their Apple Watch and Rolex Oyster Perpetual. David took a page out of our Editor-in-Chief’s book, in that he loved what Chris had done with adding the Porsche crest to his Apple watch face – looks awesome David! Bill’s Rolex Oyster Perpetual with dark dial, no date and green indices looked very subtle, dressy and professional. It was a birthday gift and, like most Rolex watches, is a prized family heirloom. Fun fact, even though Rolex is the most well-known brand in the world, Apple outsold the entire Swiss watch industry as of 2019! I find it very similar in comparing a Taycan to the 911.

Speaking of Porsches and Rolexes, I’m happy to include an email submission from one of our members who lives up in Kincardine. Fred Robinson owns a 1981 Porsche 911 SC in Pewter Metallic with a Houndstooth interior which he purchased in 2013. It goes well with his 1969 Rolex Oyster Perpetual, which he bought while living in the UK, and has worn over the past 55 years. Both of these were once a boyhood dream for Fred (I can relate!) – congratulations in making your dreams come true Fred! It is a popular opinion that Porsche and Rolex are synonymous with each other – representing quality, workmanship and brand recognition. Rolex sponsors the 24 Hours of Le Mans and Rolex 24 at Daytona – in both of which Porsche has a very deep history of racing. </>
