I BOUGHT THIS BOOK back when it was published in 2006. I checked out its current value and was pleasantly surprised to see Amazon wants almost $500 (although it can be found cheaper elsewhere). I suggest if you have any Porsche memorabilia, preserve and hang onto it. Just like our cars, those items also increase in value.
Norbert Singer was the engineer who played a key role in Porsche’s first 16 victories at Le Mans, hence the title. Singer included a nice blend of anecdotes and technical information, along with good stories about the various drivers he worked with. Some of the photos, including ones by Singer himself, were first published in this book. The co-author Michael Cotton reported on the races during Singer’s tenure at Porsche. Cotton currently writes the European Windows column in Panorama magazine with his son Andrew.
One of the stories identified concerns during the 1974 Le Mans race. The 917s were no longer allowed but Singer had high hopes for the Carrera RSR turbo, which had worked its way up to second place by Sunday morning. The Matra, which was winning, had a gearbox designed and built by Porsche that was failing. Matra asked for assistance from Porsche. The request was sent to the top man, Dr. Fuhrman, who said of course Porsche should help and the repair was done in 20 minutes. The Matra went on to win and the 911 finished second. </>
